NOTE ON OLD VERB ENDINGS

17세기 영어와 현대 영어에서 2인칭 단수 주어(thou)와 3인칭 단수 주어(he 등)의 경우 동사의 끝 부분이 est와 eth로 규칙적으로 변한다. 그러므로 누구라도 동사의 끝 부분만 보면 주어가 2인칭(thou) 단수인지, 3인칭 단수(he 등) 인지 금세 알 수 있다.

(A) 2인칭 단수 주어 thou에 붙은 동사의 -est 어미와 -st 어미 처리

To Understand -est & -st Verb Endings

(1) 동사의 -est 어미는 생략하면 현대 영어와 같게 된다(Drop every -est verb ending together with any double consonant that precedes it to form the modern equivalent).

lay-est is lay; lead-est is lead; left-est is left; set-test is set; sin-nest is sin; sit-test is sit; swim-mest is swim;

Num 11:11

And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?

Ps 80:1

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.

(2) 동사의 -st 어미는 생략하면 현대 영어와 같게 된다(Drop every -st verb ending to form the modern equivalent).

change-st is change; charge-st is charge;

Job 14:20

Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

2 Sam 3:8

Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?

(B) 3인칭 단수 주어 he 등에 붙은 동사의 -eth 어미와 -th 어미 처리

To Understand -eth & -th Verb Endings

(1) 동사의 -eth 어미는 대부분 s로 바꾸면 현대 영어와 같게 된다(Change most -eth verb endings to s).

err-eth is errs; esteem-eth is esteems; exact-eth is exacts; fight-eth is fights; sit-teth is sits;

Prov 10:17

He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

Rom 14:5

One manesteemethone day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

(2) ss, sh, th, x, ch, o, & i 등과 같은 글자 뒤의 -eth 어미는 es로 바꾸면 현대 영어와 같게 된다(After certain letters such as ss, sh, th, x, ch, o, & i change the -eth to es).

John 5:32

There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

Prov 25:13

As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.

(3) 동사의 -th 어미는 s로 바꾸면 현대 영어와 같게 된다(Change each -th verb ending to an s).

curse-th is curses; deceive-th is deceives; declare-th is declares; decline-th is declines; defile-th is defiles;

Matt 15:4

4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

Rev 12:9

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

보기에 친숙한 것 같지 않은 KJV의 단어들은 다음의 네 방법 중 하나를 사용하여 쉽게 해결할 수 있다.

1. 좋은 영어 사전을 사용하라. 어떤 단어의 구체적이고 정확한 뜻을 알려면 ｢Oxford Unabridged, The Glossary of the Cambridge Interleaved Bible｣ 혹은 1828년 판 ｢The American Dictionary of the English Language, Noah Webster｣ 등을 사용하라.

2. 성경에 포함된 사전을 사용하라. 특히 한 단어가 여러 번 나타날 때 앞 뒤 문맥을 잘 살펴보면 그 뜻을 알 수 있다. 즉, 성경은 성경으로 풀라는 것이다.

3. 하나님께서 어떻게 고어를 처리하시는가를 살펴보기 위해 삼상9:1-11을 참고하라. 그분께서는 여전히 고어들을 그대로 두시되 성경에서 그것들에 대한 정의를 내려 주신다.

4. KJV에 있는 Thee나 Thou 등은 1611년의 영어가 아니고 성경 언어임을 기억하라. KJV가 번역되었을 당시 사람들이 대화할 때 사용하던 이런 단수 단어들은 이미 당신을 뜻하는 You로 대체되어 있었다. Thee, Thou, Thy, Ye를 You나 Your로 바꾸면 단수 (thee, thou, thy)와 복수(ye) 사이의 중대한 영적 차이를 제대로 전달할 수가 없다(예를 들어 요3:7 등과 같은 구절). 또한 하나님, 예수님을 You로 부를 수는 없기에 존칭의 의미를 갖는 Thou 등을 사용할 수밖에 없었다.
