*replenish (ed) - (7x) – simply defined this word means to keep something at the same level as it was received.  The “re” beginning this word does not mean “again” as in most words with the “re” prefix.  It’s root is from the Middle English replenisshen, [note the spelling] which is the same as the Middle French repleniss-, from the stem of replenir, which means to fill; to fill with persons or animals; to stock.  It is not from the Latin word which is a combination of the prefix “re” and “plenus.”  [note spelling]  In Jer 31:25 replenish is paralleled to “satiate” which means also to fill completely.  It is contrasted in Ezek 26:2 with “laid waste.”  Gen 1:28 means to use the resources (subdue) and then “fill it back up” to its previous level. Don’t allow any of God’s creation to become extinct as every part of creation reveals God Himself (Ps 19; Rom 1)

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Adam and Eve were to multiply through the birth of many children.  However, they were to use the resources of the earth (subdue) and then “fill it back up” to its previous level.  God did not create an arbitrary number of each animal and plant.  All of the creation is a reflection of God Himself (Ps 19:1-4, Rom 1:20).  To erase a species is to take away a visible representation of the invisible God.

Genesis 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.  Noah was to keep all of the species of animals and plants.  There were only 2 of many animals so it would have been very easy to eliminate a reflection of God’s glory.  Noah was to make sure no species was erased.

Isaiah 2:5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD. 6 Therefore thou [God] hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers. 7 Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:
Isaiah calling the house of Jacob back to walk in the light of the LORD.  God hast forsaken His people because they are receiving their restored sustenance, not from Him, but from the east; they please themselves in the children of strangers.  They are not pleasing themselves in the LORD.  God provided, the Hebrews consumed it, but were replenished by the children of strangers; they were kept at the same level of sustenance, not from God, but from strangers.

Isaiah 23:2 Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished.  The inhabitants of the isle are keeping their sustenance at the same level daily by receiving what they daily need from the merchants of Zidon.

Jeremiah 31:25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.
Here replenish is paralleled to “satiate” which means also to fill completely back to the point where the soul once was, not weary.  Cf Psalm 23 “…restoreth my soul…”

Ezekiel 26:2 Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is
broken that was the gates of the people: she is turned unto me: I shall be
replenished, now she is laid waste:

Here replenish is contrasted in with “laid waste”, the complete state of emptiness.
Tyrus is boasting that the loss of Jerusalem’s wealth will now be hers through
those fleeing from Jerusalem to her.  Jerusalem’s loss was Tyrus’ gain back to a
    full state.

Ezekiel 27:25 The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou wast
replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas.
Ezekiel continues his prophecy against Tyrus by proclaiming that Tyrus also kept
here daily needs filled through the ships of Tarshish.

    Conclusions

    1) Man himself was to multiply, but he was to replenish the plants and animals.  This explains Deut 22:7.
Deuteronomy 22:7 But thou shalt in any wise let the dam go, and take the young
to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.
If the Hebrews killed both the dam and the young, the species would soon be
    extinct.
    2)  The illustration of the Kendall’s pantry
Here’s a silly made-up illustration.  I am going to be gone for 3 months and I ask you to live in my house and “make yourself at home” using all that is there for yourself.  When I open the pantry you cannot help but notice that we have 5 jars of peanut butter which prompts you to ask, “Was peanut butter on sale?  Is that why you have 5 jars?”  I reply, “No, it’s just a Kendall-thing.  All of the Kendall’s—my brothers, my mother, cousins—we all keep 5 jars of peanut butter in our pantries.  It’s a reflection of the Kendall’s.”

So I tell you to eat everything you desire, even the peanut butter.  But when I return please have 5 jars of peanut butter; replenish the cupboard.  That way my pantry will continue to reflect the Kendall’s.
    3) Another illustration
If I called you and asked you to replenish my refrigerator, what would you have to know?   What was in it in the first place.  You cannot replenish if you did not know how many gallons of milk, how many sticks of butter, etc first were in the refrigerator.
    4)  This definition eliminates the false teaching that there was an early earth before Adam and Eve that had animals and plants upon it.  Even if this assumption is true, how could Adam and Eve re-fill the earth if they first did not know what occupied that previous earth?
    5) Simply stated, replenish means to keep something at the level you found it.
