1. 1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:

   1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2. 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

   2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren;

3. 3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,

   3 and Judah begat Perez and Zerah of Tamar; and Perez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram;

4. 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,

   4 and Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon; and Nahshon begat Salmon;

5. 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,

   5 and Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

6. 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriahs wife,

   6 and Jesse begat David the king. And David begat Solomon of her (that had been the wife) of Uriah;

7. 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,

   7 and Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abijah; and Abijah begat Asa;

8. 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah,

   8 and Asa begat Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Uzziah;

9. 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

   9 and Uzziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Ahaz; and Ahaz begat Hezekiah;

10. 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah,

    10 and Hezekiah begat Manasseh; and Manasseh begat Amon; and Amon begat Josiah;

11. 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

    11 and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brethren, at the time of the carrying away to Babylon.

12. 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

    12 And after the carrying away to Babylon, Jechoniah begat Shealtiel; and Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel;

13. 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,

    13 and Zerubbabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

14. 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud,

    14 and Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

15. 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,

    15 and Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

16. 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

    16 and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17. 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

    17 So all the generations from Abraham unto David are fourteen generations; and from David unto the carrying away to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon unto the Christ fourteen generations.

18. 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

    18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

19. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

    19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

20. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

    20 But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

21. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

    21 And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins.

22. 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

    22 Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

23. 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us."

    23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us.

24. 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.

    24 And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife;

25. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

    25 and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS.
